Program Description and Background

Infotech was selected by the Commonwealth of Virginia, through the Virginia Geographic Information Network (VGIN) and the Department of Information Technology, to produce a multi-resolution imagery basemap program. The statewide digital orthoimagery was developed consistently at resolutions at 1 foot in urban / suburban areas, approximately 7,167 square miles; 2 foot resolution in rural areas, approximately 31,923 square miles; and a 6 inch resolution in some limited urban areas covering less than 1000 square miles.

The program size, complexity, and aggressive delivery schedule made it unique in the mapping and GIS industry. Virtually the entire state (approximately 48,000 square miles) entailed new full color, leaf-off, digital orthophotography completed within one year. The digital orthoimagery base acts as a reference network and base for state and local governments and for additional spatial data development by local communities for use in GIS development.
